Lagniappe Mobile

July 28, 2009 - What I wouldn’t give for a good tomato sandwich right about now. Some tasty bread, a little mayo, salt and freshly ground pepper. And, of course, a homegrown tomato. But where to find a good tomato? Forget the supermarkets. As excited as I am about the new Publix in Fairhope, it has the same tasteless tomatoes as the rest of ‘em. I could probably find one at Market on the Square on Saturday. But, sadly, by the time you read this, the Market will be taking its summer hiatus. Now just in case you think this topic is better suited for the cuisine column, bear with me. There is a business story here.. (read more on Lagniappemobile.com)

Cheeseburger in paradise: A sizzling experiment that could help save Alabama's small farms (And it tastes good)

November 30, 2008 - In January of last year, the phone rang at Boutwell Farms, an upstart family operation near the Georgia line, specializing in organic grains, free-range pork and grass-fed beef. On the line was Johnny Fisher, general manager of Lulu's at Homeport Marina, the well-known, 450-seat Gulf Shores restaurant. Fisher, wanting to wean Lulu's off of the nondescript patties at the center of its most popular menu item, was searching for beef that was tastier, healthier and regionally produced. And he needed enough of it each year to make more than 70,000 cheeseburgers. (read more at al.com)

61,000 tomatoes

December 1, 2008 - Getting local seafood was never a problem for Lulu's at Homeport Marina. And since this spring, the restaurant has bought its beef from a family farm near Clayton, Ala. Now, Lulu's management is thinking about how it might acquire produce from Alabama's fields. Each year, for example, the restaurant buys about 61,000 tomatoes — 39,000 green, 22,000 red — at a price of about 65 cents apiece, general manager Johnny Fisher said. That works out to nearly $40,000 worth of tomatoes. "So," he wondered, "would that be enough to get someone to build a hothouse and start growing tomatoes?" (read more at al.com)

But Alabama is an exporter of cattle, meaning that it generally ships out live animals, not meat, said Perry Mobley, a commodities director with the Alabama Farmers Federation. Boutwell Farms in Clayton, which has partnered with Lulu's at Homeport Marina to provide the restaurant with organic grass-fed beef.
